Hell, the regular old flu killed more than 34,000 people in the US alone last year.

CDC estimates that the burden of illness during the 2018–2019 season included an estimated 35.5 million people getting sick with influenza, 16.5 million people going to a health care provider for their illness, 490,600 hospitalizations, and 34,200 deaths from influenza . The number of influenza-associated illnesses that occurred last season was similar to the estimated number of influenza-associated illnesses during the 2012–2013 influenza season when an estimated 34 million people had symptomatic influenza illness. It is my understanding that while the regular old flu killed more people, the percentage of people who get sick from Covid- 19 and then die from it is slightly  higher. In other words, more people get over the flu than get over Covid-19.

A friend who talked to a doctor about it said that it’s  basically 1% for flu vs 2% for Covid-19.

I think that's the same statistic I've seen. Twice as deadly as the flu isn't something to mess around with, certainly, but I don't see going off on wild conspiracy theories over something with a 98% survival rate. Guarantee you Russia and China, and the US and probably UK, would have far deadlier stuff at their disposal if that's what was happening.

The flu is supposed to be 0.1%, so that’s a big difference, 20+ times higher . COVID-19 is much closer to the Spanish Flu, which is estimated to be somewhere in the 2-5% range.

In addition, right now COVID seems to spread about twice as easily.

Of course it’s hard to track these things while the outbreak is ongoing, and we’ve yet to see if Western medicine does any better at treatment than the Chinese. It’s possible that overall, or at least in the developed world, it won’t be as bad as it has been thus far.
